Lesson and discussion:

Words that are written in bold are when you, the parent, are speaking. Feel free to use your own words.

  1. Talk about sin. Sin is doing bad things (I John 5:17). All of us have sinned (done bad things). {Romans 3:23} Who is all? Jesus was without sin (Hebrews 4:15).

What bad things did the following people do? Write them on pieces of paper and put them in the pie pan.

    • Adam & Eve
    • Goliath
    • Belshazar
    • Judas
    • Pilot
    • Pharaoh
    • Lot

What bad things do we do? Write them on pieces of paper and put them in the pie pan.

    • Using bad words
    • Lying
    • Hitting
    • Stealing
    • Disobeying
    • Being selfish

What can we do to help us do more good things and fewer bad things? Write them on pieces of masking tape and put them on the broom handle.

    • Believe in Jesus
    • Go to church
    • Obey parents
    • Read the Bible
    • Pray
    • Go to Sunday School
    • Have Family Times
    • Say "no" to doing bad things

  1. ACTIVITY: Fill the jar with water and place it near the edge of a table. Put the pieces of paper listing the sins in the pie plate and place it on top of the jar. Center the toilet paper tube on the pie plate also being careful to ensure the tube is centered over the jar opening under the pie plate. Place the egg sideways balanced on top of the tube. Place the jar in a position so that only the edge of the pie plate sticks out over the edge of the table.

In this activity we start with a pie pan and some pieces of paper. The pieces of paper represent sins in our lives. Sins are bad choices that we make, choices that God would not want us to make. Use the pieces of paper that have sins written on them. The jar of water represents people, you and me. The egg represents God. If we are the jar of water and God is the egg then what separates us from God? Sin. What we need is a sin buster. We need someone who can come into our lives and take the sin away so that we can be back together with God. Who do you think can be our sin buster? Jesus. That's right! Jesus represented by the broom is our sin buster. Write Jesus on a piece of masking tape and put it around the top of the broom.

While holding back the broom handle, step on the straw part of the broom which should be located directly under the jar, pie pan and egg. Press down on the table with you free hand next to the jar. This adds extra support. Pull back the broom handle several inches and release. The broom should act as a "spring." The broom will knock the pie pan out of the middle. The table will stop the momentum of the broom handle and the egg will fall down into the water. When Jesus knocks the sin out of our lives, we can be back together with God.

V.
Memorize:
Jesus knocks our sin away
So close to God we can stay.
VI.
Close in prayer.
