• Words written in bold are when the leader is speaking. Feel free to use your own words.

Activity #1: Using a large piece of paper and pens, ask the children to write their names on the paper. Then ask them, “How did you know those letters, and how did you know those letters spell your name?” Mom showed me. My teacher taught me. “Good. So, you memorized what mom or a teacher taught you.”

Next, ask the children to give the names of those people sitting around the table. “How did you know their names?” Mom told me. Dad told me. “Oh, so you memorized what mom told you.”

Now, on a large piece of paper, write common phrases that your family uses around the house and ask the kids to fill in the blanks. Here are examples from my house:

I love you more than fried chicken.
Who loves you? Daddy, Mommy and Jesus.
No climbing on the table.

Again, reiterate that they know how to fill in the blanks because they have memorized what they have heard. You may also talk about how we memorize important things we need to remember to keep us safe, such as our phone number and address and our mommy and daddy’s names.

Activity #2: Just like we memorize important things to keep us safe, we can memorize what God has written to keep us safe. Read the scriptures from Psalms and Job and talk about how God wants us to memorize his stories and words in the Bible in the same way we memorize names, rules and important information.

Did you know we already have memorized some of what God tells us in the bible? We do it through some of the songs we sing. (Use personal examples of songs your kids sing around the house.)

In this Family Time, we are going to memorize new words from God.

Here you may choose any song or video, which contains scripture that you want your children to learn.

Play the song several times and have the children sing along until they can repeat it word for word. (You’ll be amazed how quickly they can do this!)

It is important to mom and dad that you learn the things God has taught us.

Memorize:
God’s words I remember
Every day, from January through December.
