A.W. Tozer once said,
What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.
I have wrestled with that recently. Not the truth of the statement, but the application of it. Let me ask you a question: What does God think about you today? How does He feel about your kids? Is he angrily waiting for you to finally “figure it out” because you continue to miss the mark?
I maintain that he looks on you and me with love and cares deeply about those in your family, even though you continually fall short. That’s why we need Him!
In 1 Peter 5:6-7, the friend of Jesus says this,
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
The parents that I get to minister to through Family Time (famtime.com) almost always arrive at a training event hopeful but discouraged. Fear overwhelms them when they consider how they are likely failing their children, and they go from one degree of discouragement to another as they mistakenly compare their own family to someone else’s. By contrast, it’s one of my greatest joys to, through the gospel, see the Holy Spirit lift them out of such negative views of themselves. The truth is, I believe that families like this and my own family would do well to know that the Lord looks at them with the care of a loving Father and not like a disapproving coach that’s filled with exasperation at your missed tackles.
Regardless of how complicated your situation may be or how discouraged you feel today, I want to give you two encouragements that I’m also preaching to myself:
1. God is good. Many times, we begin to doubt God or allow anxiety to overshadow truth in such a way that we forget His goodness. You can trust God with everything, including your family, because God is perfectly good! (See Psalm 34:8)
2. God is trustworthy. It’s hard to find good babysitters, right? It’s hard to find people whom you can trust with your kids! Every parent wants their kids to be taken care of, while also realizing that no one can care for them like they can. Are you and I willing to trust God with even our kids? I believe we can because there is no one as trustworthy as the Lord. His strong hands provide the safety and confidence we could never offer ourselves.
While these two points may seem obvious to the casual onlooker, ask yourself, “Today, how do I view God?” When we view God rightly, we have a better chance of understanding how He views us. As you read this, take a moment to trust our kind God with things like your marriage, your children, your grandchildren, your church, your finances, your health, and your future. As you pray, you’ll be reminded of things that you need to give to Him. Run, don’t walk, to your Father who is eager to hear from you (Psalm 116:2).
