With all the gorgeous green trees around us in the summertime, it’s a great time to remind ourselves of how to help our children grow spiritually following their example. Colossians 2:6-7 gives us a pattern to follow.

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7

Plant the Seed

We always start with the seed being planted. Have you planted the seed of salvation in your children’s hearts? Do they know the Good News of the truth about Jesus? If not, till that soil, by helping them see their need for Jesus and His salvation. Help them know what life and eternal life will be like with Him. Then they can make the decision to accept Christ Jesus as their Lord.

Don’t know how to tell them the truth about Jesus? Go to my website’s home page and scroll down and you’ll find a simple presentation of the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus I call “The Most Important Thing.”

Follow Him by Growing Roots into His Foundation

Then Paul says, we must continue to follow Him after we’ve accepted Christ Jesus as Lord. The next step of following Jesus is being firmly planted by growing our roots down into Him.

This is where we lay the foundation of faith in our children’s hearts. We read the Bible to them, train them how to read the Bible on their own, make sure they’re learning about the truth in a local church at Sunday school, youth group, and/or “Big Church” (with the adults).

Each time we expose our children to the truth of God and His word, we’re helping them build their lives on Him, with their roots securely in Him as their foundation.

What is the next thing you can do to help your children to grow roots into Jesus as their foundation?
